I am still struggling to get the frequencies on the MFM webiste to display correctly in Chrome, Firefox and IE so this will have to be listed as UNID site for now.

France Musique from Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano (20A) was s nice surprise. I am pretty sure 91.8 was there too but I couldn't give this my full attention as I was on the phone at the time sorting out (and getting very frustrated with) Sky, trying to sort out their regular overcharging tactics.

So, another good day of Es but one where I had to miss lots of it while I spent two hours on the phone trying to find a decent alternative to Sky (phone, TV and narrowband) and failing. How do we manage to put up with the dreadful level of service we get from our media providers in this country?

I have included some positively ID'd stations with my unids if they had multiple sites in case anybody knows more regarding the correct/actual site. I think my Virgin on 88.1 was very likely from Cannes, despite being much lower power than the co-channel, higher-powered Nice since Cannes was logged elsewhere during this opening and I am unaware of anything coming in from Nice throughout the opening.

This was indeed a superb and widely-spread opening and possibly the best day of the season. I had to miss most of it but still bagged a fair number of stations, including many personal firsts.

Some signals were STRONG. RDS became difficult when this happened.

The opening was frequently up to the top of the band though I found myself concentrating on lower parts where it seemed easier to determine the transmitter sites. Still many got away though.

I love the Es opening to France. The paths can get quite short at times and it was fun to pick out lots of stations from St Raphael and the Côte d'Azur.

I don't know how much of this opening I missed but I certainly caught a heck of a lot of it. At the beginning I only heard the weakest of signals, as if low-level MS and seemingly all Greek. Lots of them too, but it qickly became apparent that it was all E skip. I had to wait some time before signals were strong enough to produce RDS, by which time Italy had appeared and mostly took over for the duration. I had to go out at 1200 with the opening in full swing. 100% the best August Es I have ever known.

OFCOM Visit & their evaluation of the Körner 9.2

Some good - and maybe also some slightly embarrassing news regarding my band 2 noise problems.

OFCOM visited me earlier today, their fourth visit no less! They couldn't have come at a better time too as my noise was pushing two bars on the XDR. That's - enough to add an irritating level of mush even to quite decent signals. However, it quickly became clear that the noise was not coming from the direction of the neighbours. It seemed to be coming from all around. After the conducted some DFing with a very nice little Rhode & Schwarz DFing loop antenna, the noise was traced to our own CCTV system. Bugger! On disconnecting this, all was quiet and there was very little noise across band 2 at all. It was almost 'DXpedition quiet', even when beaming towards the neighbouring property. I could hear lots of German stations via scatter right across the band, many at armchair levels!

Embarrassed? Well, let's say I felt a little awkward, but thankfully the OFCOM officials had seen the original problem for themselves during their first visit when I had disconnected the entire power supply to the property and they could clearly see the noise levels which were radiating from the direction of our neighbours. There's no concrete evidence that the noise is coming from our neighbour's property, but it's certainly from that direction.

What I hadn't realised until today was that our CCTV system had become noisier than it was a few weeks ago and it was this which had been causing the recent increase in noise levels. The 'neighbourly' noise must have been buried underneath the CCTV noise. Today though, things were quieter than I have heard them in more than a year.

With the CCTV drive switched off I can still detect a little noise, but it is far less severe. I don't expect it to last of course, considering the nature of modern equipment and PSUs, but at least the band is beautifully quiet at the moment.

Körner 9.2
While OFCOM were here, one of them asked about the gain figures on my Körner 9.2 antenna. From memory I said something like 8dB or more. They thought that was too high. Unknown to me at the time, one of them connected the 9.2 to an expensive looking analyser test gear thing and was checking the performance. He responded with a "wow" and showed me the response curve across band 2, showing it to be at least 8dB across the entire band, peaking around 8.5dB at 88.2 MHz. I cannot remember the detail but I think he referred to 'dBd'. We had a discussion about the antenna after this and my poor brain cell became confused and fell over so I hope the facts here are correct.

What is clear is that this 9.2 antenna is an absolute beauty and I cannot praise its performance highly enough. This is impressive when you consider that the 9.2 is only a couple of inches longer than the Triax FM5. Full credit to the designers.

I had to miss the majority of this fairly lengthy opening to Spain but when I did get chance to listen I concentrated on the top of the band.

Unfortunately, I will have very little time, if any time at all, to DX for the rest of this week and next due to an impending marriage! I think this is a good reason ;O) I will be marrying Jane, a radio ham like myself, on the beach here in Skegness this coming weekend. Naturally we are hoping the weather will be kind to us and it looks fair at the moment, but our area never seems to agree with the local forecasts due to this coastline bowing out into the sea slightly. At least we aren't going to see the 35 degree temperatures that were originally forecast for this weekend. Phew! The DX will have to wait for a while now.

What lies beneath the noise?

I can only guess! Maybe nothing. Maybe a lot! There's no way of knowing while it's there.

The recording is in three parts.

The first part demonstrates the noise with three recordings:

1. As it sounds at the top of the band (108.0 MHz).
2. At the bottom of the band (87.5 MHz), both with the aerial facing east.
3. Beaming south, away from my noise, tuned to 107.8 to demonstrate a weak station.

The second part of the recording is a quick comparison between 2 and 1.

The third part is a quick comparison between 2 and 3. This is the 'must hear'.

The band is still not entirely quiet in 3, but beaming south gives me my best chance of less noise. But even with 3, the difference between the relatively quieter noise level and the lask of noise I would expect on a DX trip in an electrically quiet location is very noticeable.

I can only dream of what it must be like to live in a perfectly electrically quiet location.
