Using Web Streams To Help Identify Stations

Most major radio broadcasters now have an 'audio stream' of their live programming on their website, so you can listen to them online. Additionally, there are dedicated websites which contain collections of broadcaster's audio streams, sometimes thousands of them! All these streams are very useful for the DXer since they make it possible for you to make a quick comparison between a particular station's audio and something you might be hearing on your radio.

The purpose of this blog entry is to compile a handy list of such websites for myself, and will hopefully be of use to other DXers too. There are also a few issues which need some consideration and I have included these below.

A Simple Search
If you don't know the stations's web address, there are various easy ways you could find it via a simple Google search. For example. Let's say you are searching for the station MFM from Morocco. Searching on these letters alone will lead you to the websites of many other stations which may also have the same name. It's too generic in this case, so narrow down your search by throwing in a few other words. Try adding the frequency in the search string, or the web suffix of the country. "mfm .ma" works for me and the station's website appears near the top of the list. You could also try "mfm morocco" or "mfm casablanca", etc.

Something less generic, such as the radio station name "Al Idaâ Al Amazighia" should appear at the top of the search list by searching on the name alone. It does for me.

Dedicated Stream Websites
There are many, Let's take Tune In to begin with. Search for "mfm morocco tunein" to get the desired result, or search directly via their website. You can also try other sites with Arabic radio audio streams such as Surfmusic, Okbob or Fonmy.

A personal favourite for Algerian audio streams is Surfmusic, though a small number of Algerian streams are not listed, but you might be able to find them via Qassimy, for example: Radio Chlef.

For the UK, I can recommend Radiofeeds, but I cannot find their main UK listing. A search now seems the only option.

I have only mentioned a few of the many websites which contain collections of audio feeds, but this page gives details of those I have found to be the most useful.

Some points to bear in mind when using internet audio streams:

Internet lag:
This can work two ways. The audio which is streamed through the internet will suffer a time delay. This can vary between a few seconds to more than a minute, though the latter is rare these days. I have noticed a delay of around 30 seconds on some North African streams lately. The internet audio can also be ahead of the broadcast audio if for instance that audio is being re-streamed for another station. I hear this occasionally, especially on pirate radio stations.

Popular Songs:
So you are hearing that number one song on a very weak signal. Every stations seems to be playing it lately. What's to say it's not being broadcast on that frequency by another station? Extra care is needed. Try to listen to three songs in a row to confirm the web parallel if possible, though two songs should be sufficient, especially if the time lag is 'about right'. Ideally, there needs to be other clues too.

What I wanted to do on this page was list the most popular streaming services for use as a quick reference for myself, or anybody else who might want to make use of it. So where to begin?

The FM List website has many direct links to audio streams at the foot of the frequency lists. This is an excellent place to begin, but read on.

A problem you will encounter is some of those stream addresses will change without warning. You shouldn't have this problem if you have accessed the stream directly via the station's website as they should have kept this up-to-date, but if it's a link hosted elsewhere, outside that station's website, that address might change on a regular basis and you'll get a dead link. So using the station's website may be the best thing to try to begin with.

I hope these notes are of use.

I actually slept with the laptop next to me overnight so I could check DX Maps for any increase in the MUF. Once I saw a path open up to the east I was out of bed in a flash!

Summarising, the day was split into four Es openings:

The OIRT band bad Belarus, Ukraine and Russia around 0800. Those were the strongest Es of the day. There was some activity on band 2 but it was shortlived and very weak.

A second and unexpected opening (DX Maps didn't suggest any obvious activity at the time) occirred around local midday to Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

The third opening was a very weak opening to Finland. All stations had to be identified by web streams.

Finally, the band struggled to open again during the early evening to Algeria and Spain.

Good DX!

Sporadic E 2013: Mid Season Analysis

Sporadic E 2013: Mid Season Analysis

Personally, this has been the best sporadic E season I have known on the FM broadcast band. I will try to be more specific, but suffice to say there has been a lot more of it! Here is a brief, non-technical analysis.

The main factor has been the almost daily occurrence of E skip reaching 88 MHz and above.

Signal strengths have generally been quite weak when the MUF has only reached the lower section of the band - up to 94 MHz or so. By "weak", I refer to zero to two bars on the signal meter on the KT6040. When the Es have extended to the top of the band I tend to find that the Es can reach good levels, sometimes qite strong, reaching a full five bars on the KT6040 and across the whole band. So strong that they can sometimes take out my local Belmont transmitter!

There have been many more days than usual where the Es have flirted with the bottom of the band, never amounting to much and which haven't developed into a full-scale band-wide opening. While this has been frustrating, I think it is an indication that the MUF has generally been much higher, because those 'flirty' Es would be zero Es in other years.

Another curious factor of this year's Es season was its early start. I have been joking that the season peaked in late April, but that isn't far from the truth. May had some excellent openings too, but June, while still being very good, has seen a gradual decline in those strong, band-wide openings.

The pattern of Es seems to have been more predictable this year, with morning openings, typically between 07:00 and 10:00. Then evening openings typically between 17:00 and 20:00. Sporadic E can happen at any time and while these are the traditional peak times for sporadic E, the regularity of this has been obvious, with very little variation.

As for anything unusual, only one thing springs to mind, though I doubt it means anything. There have been more instances of openings into the Atlantic with the Canaries being received on two occasions (double hop, but perhaps more likely Es to Portugal and tropo the rest of the journey) and the Azores has been received several times. Openings into the Atlantic are often missed as there are no warning signs. What would you receive if the band was open into a body of water? Nothing! Then suddenly the Azores appear out of nowhere.

There have been more instances of Greece and the Balkans this season too, plus my first possible reception of turkey on 98.0 with a tentative Radyo Cihan from Canakkale on 98.0. Greece and the Balkans were present across much of band 2 at the time. I have noticed that the Es clouds have regularly been producing high MUFs over eastern Europe and this has given me these Es when the clouds have gradually drifted westward.

The highlight for me has been the sheer number of loggings. I have amassed 2572 individual sporadic E loggings at June 30th, the most I have ever had for a single season and we're only about half way through it!

My notes will be meaningless to most people since sporadic E is just that ... "sporadic". There is no way of predicting who receives what and when. Some people get it, others don't. Take the experience of the USA this year. A DXer in the north-east of the US recently told me that they haven't had an Es season so far and that there has been only one day of decent band 2 Es to shout about. Europe has been awash with Es, regularly spreading up into the 2m amateur band!

So, as always, what is an excellent season for some, will have been a lesser season for others. That's sporadic E for you.

As a late starter I often arive after the event. Today was one morning I really didn't want to lie in, but I did. Judging by the number of auto-logged Balkans on 87.6 it looks like I could have missed the best Balkan opening of the season.

Then came this afternoon. I had high hopes for good conditions after watching the Es build over central Europe on the DX clusters. In the end it looks like I was right on the edge of the opening most of the time. There was some DX to Poland, Moscow, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia and Italy, but the loggings came in at the rate of just over one per hour. Frustrating, but at least there were Es.

A sudden drop in the MUF at 1945 has enabled me to prepare today's loggings a little earlier than usual. Maybe an early night tonight!

Today's opening to the Azores was even better than the last with a few new frequencies. There were several stations I couldn't identify though because of a lack of working web streams but I'm sure Madeira was present and possibly Cape Verde. From memory I had Portuguese stations on 89.0, 91.6 & 92.7. I forget the others. Also it seems I lost one logging of Canal FM, not sure where that disappeared to. Presumably I thought I had entered it into the log when I hadn't.

There were a few new Moroccans too, including a low power outlet of Medradio on 88.0 which I had assumed to be the Spanish Sahara. Both were carrying very similar programmes but after checking the web streams it was clear which one I was receiving.

Nice to get back into carrier monitoring on band 1. My little half wave dipole seems to be doing the trick. A presumed Jordanian carrier was seen at  55.249.875. As Jurgen said, nothing was received on E2 or E4 at the time. My calibration will probably be out slightly as I have nothing with which to calibrate against so please excuse any small inaccuracy. Once I'd received the JRTV1 carrier I looked at their audio on 60.75 but the MUF never got that high at the time. Greece slowly appeared on band 2 a few minutes later, together with one or two mysteries.

Is this Turkish?

It is not the first time I have heard this station when Greece has been present.

A bit of live meteor scatter and a bandscan of aircraft scatter while the Es MUF has subsided. Scatter conditions have shown some signs of improving after a lull for several days. The weather has been slightly warmer at 19 degrees, a few degrees higher than the forecast had predicted. Hopefully there will be some tropo over the coming days as that high pressure system moves closer.

Good DX!

The Scientists Are Wrong!

Based on a recent NASA article about this year's earlier appearance of noctilucent clouds, speculation has been mounting about a possible correlation between these and the unusually early start to the sporadic E season. As DXers, we know this is not the case.

The reason for this year's vigourous Es season has been largely due to the massive summer hit "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk. Haven't you noticed the enormous amount of airplay this song has when there is an opening? It's more than coincidence that this song is playing constantly on every single radio station when the Es are present.

Professor Bodd Foxe of the University of Wallamaloo has studied these effects and concludes that the song exhibits certain vibrational effects which could be heating up the ionosphere. It was initially thought that only DXers with super-high gain equipment living on the east coast of Australia would be able to hear this, but signals have been so strong that ordinary, less well placed DXers have been able to enjoy frequent sporadic E event too.

DXers should be aware of the claim of intense Es in February of this year, made by south coast DXer Dick Farlon, reporting reception of Pakistan on band 2. Columbia Records were quick to point out that the Daft Punk single hadn't been released at that time.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to the next single from Daft Punk called "This Is The Best Medium Wave DX Season Ever", due to be released at the autumnal equinox. We wish them every success with that.

Thanks to Daft Punk, it looks like we are all Getting Lucky with the DX this year!
