What a day! The third period of double hop into Turkey in less that a week and we're still only in the early stages of the season!

It began with simultaneous openings to Poland, Slovakia, Moldova and the Balkans. Istanbul appeared briefly on 87.5. Then Ankara and Adana appeared, cross fading with each other. It was clear to see which areas of Turkey were received as the two different areas of skip faded in and out independently, demonstrating that there was more than one Es opening in place.

Sanliurfa and Kayseri appeared in the south of the country, then Duzce in the north-west. Then things started getting serious with the appearance of the Van transmitter in south-eastern Turkey.

Was it going to extend further? Arabic appeared on a few frequencies. Clearly something unusual was happening. At 13:30, the biggest surprise of them all came in, right at the end of the opening. The BBC World Service's Arabic programme appeared on 89.0! I wasn't sure what I was hearing to begin with, but the words "London", "BBC" and "bbcarabic.com" were all there. Ian Kelly came to the rescue with a link to the BBC World Service Arabic podcast for the same time and, after cross-referencing everything, it became clear that what I had heard was "BBC World Service Arabic". The transmitter in Baghdad was inline with my reception, so it seems safe to assume that this was definitely double hop Es to Iraq. Two other transmitters of BBC WS Arabic are also listed on the frequency, but the Baghdad transmitter was the closest. I can't rule out this being one of the others but Baghdad may make more sense due to other Arabic stations received at the time which were also potential Baghdad transmitters.
