Kenwick Top DX Trip: 08-08-15
Chris, aka "Sniffingmoose", visited Skegness on the 8th and we took an afternoon trip to Kenwick Top, just up the road from here. Although the 'summit' of this hill is not particularly high at 93 metres above sea level, it provides excellent continental scatter in favourable conditions. Some have described it as 'mindblowing'. On an average day, the Berlin transmitter of BB Radio can be heard clearly on 107.5 MHz. A distance of around 820 km.
Ian Kelly and I visited a couple of weeks earlier during poor conditions, but managed to hear the Forfar transmitter of BBC Radio Scotland on 92.7 at 420 km. Thankfully, our trip on the 8th coincided with high pressure and so some ducting was taking place.
Equipment in use was a Sony XDR-F1HD with the Konrad modification, a laptop running the XDR-GTK software and a Triax FM5 on a 10m telescopic mast - extended to about half its maximum height due to missing sections.
Pick of the bunch has to be good reception of Sveriges P3 from Norrköping at 1150 km. We found this by accident as we had been looking for NRK P3 from Bjerkreim on 91.8, which produced only a very weak signal, fluttering in and out rapidly, so we checked for NRK P2 from the same transmitter on 98.7, but the frequency was virtually empty. In a matter of one second, a signal suddenly blasted through producing full RDS "E203 SR_P3___". We had assumed this to be meteor scatter, but the signal stayed there for the duration of our visit, which was probably just under three hours.
Chris brought along his excellent Roberts Sport portable DAB receiver and was amazed to receive no less than four Norwegian DAB multiplexes. Quoting from his post to Skywaves:
"Yes considering conditions were supposed to be flat, I thought from my point of view Kenwick to was Excellent, with Norway and Sweden and Denmark coming through. 98.7 was the best frequency. Also swinging the beam north brought in East coast Scottish signals such as BBC Nationals from Forfar and a good catch was the Edinburgh Local Forth 1 on 97.3.
In addition I was surprised to hear Norway on DAB as well. After, I did a scan on my Roberts Sports DAB radio with only the headphone lead as the antenna brought in 4 Norway DAB MuX's 2 of them were the new DAB+ which my radio cannot decode the others were Norway's National DAB service and their regional service from Agder Rogaland. on block 13F.I did not take a formal log but I thought what a superb location for the North and East and a great afternoon DX"
Well, conditions were definitely enhanced, but not overly so. Little continental DX was available at my home QTH immediately before and after the trip, but some very weak Norwegian, Danish and German tropo did materialise an hour or so after I returned home.
Another big surprise at Kenwick Top was Forth 1 from Craigkelly (Edinburgh local) on 97.3, fluttering in and out very rapidly. We caught a reference to their website, forth1.com. In addition to this, a wealth of Scottish transmitters were received, such as Forfar, Ashkirk, Black Hill, Meldrum and Durris, some with full RDS.
Denmark also produced a reliable, if choppy signal on 97.2 and 99.9 from its Rangstrup transmitter.
Although Germany was almost non-existent when we first arrived at Kenwick Top, it appeared in force a couple of hours later.
Driving away from Kenwick Top towards Theddlethorpe, we continued to receive 13F from Norway, well down the hill and almost to the levels.

Another thoroughly enjoyable Italian session! I really enjoyed doing the detective work on this one. At first, it seemed impossible to marry the transmitter sites to the stations. Whatever area of Italy was coming through was not one of the more traditionally received parts. After spending too long on one file, playing it through several times, I realised that it was central parts of Italy was receiving. Further files and reception of some of the more local stations in these provinces confirmed this, but lots of stations 'got away' thanks to the usual multiple transmitters per frequency scenario. Nice to hear provinces such as L'Aquila, Avellino, Caserta and Isernia. These are rarely heard.

This Season's Sporadic E / Scatter / General Band Assessment and Other Stuff!
Here in Skegness, the sporadic E season didn't get going until mid June. Openings had mostly been sparse, with poor signals and very much 'bottom of the band'. The same poor conditions seem to have been felt elsewhere in the UK too, whereas band 2 DXers in eastern parts of Europe had openings more consistent with an average Es season.
Once we'd cleared the 20th June, things took off in a big way with the more familiar cross-band 'soup' you'd expect from more intense Es propagation. Signals were strong at times, but still not as strong as those experienced in the 2014 season. I base this on signal measurements taken on the Konrad XDR-GTK software. The strongest Es signals this year were from the Italians (usually the case), giving an approximate 7dB down compared with the strongest Italian signals from the 2014 season.
It wasn't all bad. In fact it was a season of contrasts. I feel like I have just been through my worst and best sporadic E season ever. Conversely, the 17th July saw my first 'double-hop' Es into the Middle East, with Istanbul stations reaching the top of the band. I thought I had moved to Istanbul! Signals actually reached GOOD levels with instant RDS right up to 108.0 MHz. Cyprus and Lebanon also made their debut appearance this year.
Had it not been for my Elad FDM-S2 SDR receiver, I could easily have missed most, if not all of those exotic catches. I had to go out during the peak of the conditions and left the FDM-S2 recording the bottom of the band which, in this case, is 87.4 to 93.4 MHz.
The Elad FDM-S2 has been nothing short of revolutionary and, without this, I would certainly have seen my smallest annual Es logbook ever, but the opposite has been true, with hundreds of loggings made on many days. This major advancement in receiving technology comes at a cost though - and I am not referring to the price. I have written elsewhere about the pros and cons of band 2 SDR DXing, but the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages, the main disadvantage being the huge number of recordings which result. These are going to take me until Christmas to go through, so if anybody is wondering where my logs are this season, I am almost two months behind with these and will post as I have finished going through each day's files.
Aside from sporadic E, tropo and scatter has been hugely disappointing this season. There have been a few nice tropo surprises along the way, but most of the enhancements felt in East Anglia and the south-east of England have missed me completely. "So near and yet so far", as the saying goes. Good continental conditions have frequently been right on my doorstep, but never quite made it over the threshold and into the shack. The boundary seems to have been set in The Wash, the large bay immediately to the south of Skegness.
Scatter has been considerably down compared to last year with very few days of anything close to normal. But why? One of those annual variations I suppose.
Speaking of the weather, The Wash has had a very definite blocking effect on things this summer. The heavy rain and severe storms which have frequented this side of England this summer have just stopped or fizzled out completely after reaching The Wash. I often wonder exactly what effect The Wash has on DXing. I know parts of The Wash usually freeze over in the winter due to the waters being so shallow. In fact this part of the North Sea is shallow too and is only around 50 metres deep off our coast.
We haven't had a summer this year. Officially the sunniest coast in the UK, the east coast has probably seen more days of cloud than sun. I can recall an entire week when no sun was visible at all. Temperatures have often been around 15 degrees C. In the event of any heat arriving, the atmosphere just becomes unbearably humid as it mixes with the cooler air. When the rest of the country were enjoying their hottest July day on record with temperatures into the mid 30s (in the south-east of England), Skegness reached 27 C. I don't mind this, personally, as I don't like hot weather.
Summer 2015 has been a season of unseasonably high winds too. I have raised my antenna on a number of occasions, only to have to lower it again the following day due to high winds which have not been forecast. High winds have been another feature, hardly ever letting up. The real problem has been sudden violent gusts, the likes of which I have never experienced before. A powerful gust will appear very suddenly and we are sure we have felt the bungalow move. Venturing out reveals tree branches in the roads and the odd litter bin lying in the path of traffic. We have had a few trees blown down in the the more severe winds.
We simply don't have a local weather forecast here. What happens this side of the Lincolnshire Wolds is rarely predicted with accuracy in any weather forecast. It sounds like an exaggeration, but after having a radio friend staying here for a week recently, he too commented on how unusual our weather has been.
Rounding it all off, it's been a year of mixed fortunes, which is usually true to form, but without any real extremes, apart from the glorious sporadic E conditions of July 17th. But maybe even these were more 'normal' than we might think since the Elad FDM-S2 receiver misses very little.

The further I progress through last summer's Es files, the weirder the season gets! Today's opening emphasizes this: The Es propagation behaved in typical 2015 fashion, sweeping from west to east - the opposite of how the Es traditionally move. In fact, the propagation paths taken by today's Spanish Es suggested that the Es were swirling around in a circle!
Conditions started with Portugal and some Moroccans dominating. Spain appeared shortly after this. Then Algeria came in. Algeria faded and Galicia took over. Suddenly, Calalunya waded in with good signals from the Barcelona area. Algeria popped in again, just to remind me it was still there. Conditions then moved west through Castilla Y Leon, missing Aragon, then took a right and focused firmly on Cantabria for a while! It didn't stop there as conditions swept south again back into Castilla Y Leon. Not wishing to leave out Algeria, this too kept joining in, I think primarily to annoy me. ;)
But a few new and interesting local stations were added to the log during this process, mostly from the Cantabrian area.
All today's loggings were extracted from 100 files which were recorded automatically while I was out in town. I was able to whiz through them pretty quickly thanks to SDR Console's File Analyser, which created a waterfall display which showed where the DX was, at what times, etc.
