An impressive Spanish opening. The Hep and F5LEN got this one just about spot on, showing a finger of tropo pointing almost straight at me then out across the North Sea, over the Netherlands and into Northern Germany, allowing record-breaking distances for some.
The first indication of tropo came from Brest. It was weak at first then increased in strength to a whopping S9+50dB within an hour. It stayed at this strength throughout most of the evening!
Galicia appeared shortly afterwards, again quite weak to begin with, but some transmitters increased to S9+30dB, producing a fair amount of RDS.
I was hoping for Portugal but it didn't happen this time. To be honest, I was surprised I was placed so nicely in the firing line for any of this! Usually, such impressive Spanish DX is reserved for the south or the west side of England.
Luckily, the noise I get from the South-West was absent for the duration of this tropo but, unluckily, the South of England was well enhanced too, giving a lot of channel blocking from the likes of Wenvoe, Rowridge, Wrotham, even Llangollen to the west. But it was nice to hear The Breeze for the first time though.
Many personal firsts were received. If you see "++" in the log, those are my notes which indicate a personal first, but there are others in there which I haven't checked. I am back at the same position I was at this time one year ago - well behind with FM tropo and Es SDR files. There's a fair bit of catching up to do.
Good DX!

I am not including 1422 in my master log as there is some uncertainty about this. It looks like it's the same station reported by Jan Edh on the 23rd.
I am surprised to be hearing such good signals from East Asia with conditions being so disturbed. This must be how it is. I've never really studied Asia under these conditions. The South Korean regulars on 972, 1170 & 1566 were completely absent! The Taiwan Fisheries station on 738 and 1143 were both doing quite well this evening. So it seems there's always something of interest from Asia, no matter what the indices.
I haven't bothered with overnight recordings in view of the recent disturbance, but it's probably time to swing the flag towards South America now with this disturbance becoming more sustained.

It took me a few days to find out what I was hearing on 980 recently. The format was back to back oldies and any announcements were too muffled to decipher. After checking a few websites I discovered that CHRF Montreal has a playlist of the last few hour's worth of songs played. http://montrealam980.com/joue-recemment/ If you wait a few seconds for the sliding bar to display, you can scroll through all the songs played. It doesn't give you the actual times but it does tell you how long ago they were played.

Conditions not so good to Asia this evening, but overnight was interesting and I think I had west coast USA.
Overall, I didn't hear a lot of North American signals. The few which were present were mostly very weak, but the following were worthy of note:
1510 had three stations around 0500: A sports station on a low offset; WMEX Boston MA around the centre of the frequency; Then an oldies station slightly higher than WMEX. I only caught WMEX's ID.
1520 also had three stations around 0500: WWKB. A talk station, plus a country music station. The latter may have been KKXA Snohomish WA.
Finally to 1000, also around 0500: Two US talk stations were fighting it out. WMVP was winning with ESPN IDs. But who was the other station? It has to be KOMO Seattle WA. But could I get an ID? No! It just faded nicely at the top of the hour, allowing WMVP to dominate.
So, I think I can safely say that west coast USA made it through this morning, even though I didn't catch an ID from presumed KOMO. Actually, I thought I heard a mention of "Komo News" at one point, but it was too weak to be certain. Let's hope things continue to improve.
