The beam was north-easterly this morning and the 9.2 was vertical. Most of the loggings resulted from one long meteor burst and I never expected to hear Ireland quite like this, presumably through backscatter. I have stated the loggings of Today FM and Beat 102-103 as "Presumed", but I think it's fairly safe to assume that these stations are definitely Today FM and Beat 102-103, despite not giving IDs or producing RDS. I am informed that the news bulletins on the hour are shared by more than one network and so won't provide any clues, but the adverts and PSAs, all being in parallel on the respective frequencies, nails things down 100%. I have saved a copy of the file which contains this meteor burst so if anybody would like a copy to listen to then please email me. In no other mode of propagation would I have ever expected to hear sites like Clonmel, Dungarvan, Carrickpherish and Achill Island. Just amazing!
Also on the same meteor burst, the two Scandinavians I received yesterday, Radio Øst and Vinyl 96.3, came in again today! So just why is it that so many of these transmitters, received via meteor scatter, are so regular and even predictable? Is it because the transmitter is less efficient at radiating the signal toward the listener at ground level and therefore is allowing a lot of radiation to travel upwards? Or is it because of the ionisation is more precise as a shower enters/burns up in the atmosphere? Either way, there does seem to be a degree of predictability. I suspect it may be due to the latter reason so, if this is the case, over a period of time I would expect to see this predictability being directly related to the individual shower. It's all become a fascinating new area of the hobby to me.

Like yesterday morning, it looked like this was going to be a day of repetition, but that didn't last long. It still seems like certain transmitters propagate better than others via meteor scatter. This could be true of any mode of propagation, but there are usually a few nice new surprises. Videos of today's low powered Scandinavians can be found on my YouTube page.
The long meteor burst at 0523 was unusual regarding the directions received. How can the same meteor burst support reception from different directions? Maybe the fact that my antenna was vertical had something to do with this as vertical polarisation is probably not as directional as you might imagine, not even with multiple elements. The transmitters at Gävle and Sarpsborg are inline with each other, but what about Clermont carn and Sandale? It seems clear to me that the meteor itself is more responsible for the direction than is the antenna. Nothing can be taken for granted!

Low Power Scandinavian Meteor Scatter
These two were a really nice surprise this morning. My Körmer 9.2 antenna was vertical at the time, beaming 60 degrees straight into southern Sweden. These two are low powered transmitters, Radio Øst having only 376 watts. Both stations were stable and strong enough to allow full RDS! You just never know what will be thrown up by meteor scatter.
