Westdorpe suddenly shot up out of the noise on meteor scatter this morning on its 97.8 frequency. Reception lasted about a second and was not present either side of this, so definitely not aircraft scatter. Quite a few Dutch stations have been heard here on meteor scatter but this country is becoming notoriously difficult to get RDS when received via MS.
That Italian "Cesena" transmitter continues to pop up when the 9.2 is vertical. There isn't much more to get from that tx and I will have the entire set! I still find it amazing how certain 'less likely sporadic E contenders' are so regular on meteor scatter.
Good DX!

Horizontal again today, beaming south-east. This is a log of everything identified. I am pretty sure the Arabic stations on 93.9 and 97.2 are from the Kef El Akhal. I think it makes sense so I have logged both are "Presumed".
Tomorrow it's back to vertical but beaming closer to the south in the hope of catching something local from France and Spain.

Meteor activity still on the low side. I thin one more overnight session in the vertical place and then I will return the 9.2 to horizontal.
Nice to receive Kaliningrad again as this is such a difficult country to catch on band 2. Meteor scatter seems to be the easiest way to catch this rare 'country'.
Scatter had improved today with conditions starting to resemble those experienced in the summer.
Good DX!

Meteor scatter was scarce today, plus I had problems with my overnight recordings. Since I had forgotten to delete some of yesterday's recordings, there was insufficient space on my hard drive and so recording stopped when the drive became full. The FDM-SW2 software warns me, before the recordings start, that there is insufficient space on the drive, but this time it didn't. I looked at the "Disable low disc space check" in the recording settings but that was not selected so I have no idea why this happened. Hopefully this was just a one-off glitch.
I usually record six hours of the band overnight and had substantially less this time. Probably less than a third. To make up for this and also the poor conditions, I made two additional 90 minute recordings during the evening, which was just enough to dig out one solitary logging.

This was a really eye-opening meteor session and one of my best to date. Some nice low power DX got through from countries I did not expect. The plan was to beam north-north-east with the 9.2 vertical in the hope of catching some low power DX from Scotland. Yes, I know, Scotland is north-west of me, but I am unable to beam that way at the moment because of the neighbour's damn conifer tree which is blocking that direction while the mast is lowered. I will get around to cutting that soon. Remembering how poor the south-west was for MS, i.e. recent sessions produced nothing at all, I did not want to veer too far off-beam of the majority of MS activity, which mostly occurs when I beam anywhere in the north-east to south-east direction. The antenna beam is not too critical during meteor scatter
Sure enough I heard several bursts of UK stations, but the RDS was never present. I was hoping for an AF list so I could nail down the precise sites. Even with the 9.2 beaing NNE I heard a few Italian stations. The real surprises were the low power outlets from Denmark, Sweden and Lithuania. When I first saw the PI code of Lietus on 103.1, I discovered there were two possible transmitters: 2.5 kW Vilnius and 500 watt Taurage-Norkaiciai. I just assumed this was going to be Vilnius, but how wrong I was. The AF list pointed to Taurage-Norkaiciai, and the next catch, Žiniu Radijas on 104.8, confirmed this.
Needless to say I am going to try this direction again tomorrow.
As always, videos of the pick of the bunch can be found on my YouTube page, be I must again point out that video recording is still providing me with many challenges. I may not continue to record my DX for much longer. CamStudio and Bandicam are providing much agony in the rear department. It took me an hour and a half to record the Radio Nord video alone this afternoon. Why are these things never simple?
Good DX!

Medium Wave Conditions - Still VERY Poor
A quick update on medium waves DX conditions.
I am still debating whether to take down my medium wave flag as this year's medium wave DX season is one of the worst I have known. I had decided to 'pull the plug' early as it is now a struggle to hear even the easiest of transatlantic signals. Urumqi on 1521 is hardly there at all and I hear Saudi Arabia or Spain dominating the frequency. Having said that I managed to hear the South Korean time signal on 972 now Hamburg has left the frequency, but it was virtually 'carrier level'.
I caught the Yankee Doodle theme on 1575 a couple of afternoons ago at 1500 but that too was 'back of the box' quality. So something is still getting through, but only just. Stations like VOA Thailand 1575 are actually fairly easy on the east coast at this time of year, just like Urumqi 1521, but nothing else is getting through now. This is a shame as the season appeared to get off to a good start.
We now have so much solar related geomagnetic activity that it's killed off the lower HF frequencies. Hopefully the next winter season sees an improvement.
Good DX!
