Surprising what gets through then the antenna is horizontal sometimes. It's definitely a quirk of propagation. Perhaps true troposcatter as it's just a single fade-in / fade-out and not at all fluttery as with aircraft scatter.

Day two of this excellent Spanish tropo.
While updating my personal all-time log I just noticed something which really surprised me. In my four years of living on the east coast I have log Spanish stations on 36 individual frequencies via tropo. That was up to the 22nd. Then came this rather amazing spell of tropo, during which I added another 42! I logged 46 personal firsts in total, including the French and one UK station!
What a truly amazing tropo this has been!

** Personal Skegness 'First'
An evening of spectacular tropospheric DX to northern Spain and south-west France! Definitely my best to this area so far. Furthest distance was the La Coruna transmitter at 1363 km, not a million miles from the Portuguese border.
There were also LOTS of Spanish stations I couldn't identify due to their brief nature. Beaming south-west in vertical polarisation produces a full band of English stations from the Midlands, so the Spanish stations often had quite a fight on their hands.
I had to be extremely careful how I rotated the antenna too as the neighbour's tree is now greatly restricting movement in that direction. After some minor damage, which has since been rectified, I managed to get the antenna vertical and discovered that this was where the action was. Surprisingly, no Spanish tropo was available when the antenna was horizontal. I wanted to flip back to horizontal later on when I discovered local outlets from Bayonne, but it was the early hours of the morning by that time and the G-5500 rotator makes quite a racket. Sound travels well at night, so I kept the antenna vertical. Horizontal to the south-west is a noisy direction for me anyway so I probably wouldn't have benefited much horizontally anyway. I still don't understand why vertical is much quieter in this direction.
Videos of many of the above catches can be seen on my YouTube page: www.youtube.com/g1vvp

This was an unexpected and one of my best openings to the far east so far. Reception probably received a boost as it coincided with a sudden rise in geomagnetic activity, which can often produce good results if you are on the band at that very moment.
There is a fair bit of noise across the band but it didn't mask out the above stations. As always, you will need headphones for some of the recordings as they are very weak and sometimes underneath European stations.

** Personal Skegness 'First'
I am really pleased with today's haul. Despite very brief pings it quickly became clear which stations were coming through. All the above were noted fairly regularly throughout the monitoring periods. All personal firsts as I have never tried these frequencies for meteor scatter.
Good DX!
