I came into today's opening rather late but still heard some intresting
new DX from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Italy preceded
this, but when I first tuned in, shortly after 0800, hardly anything
from Italy was RDSing, despite some very strong signals. I can now use
the term "very strong", knowing it has a bit more weight behind it. The
XDR, barefoot, gave no idea how strong signals were. Same with the
KT6040 to a degree, but now I have a reference figure and so i could see
that some Italian signals were actually stronger than Belmont - even if
I were to beam directly at Belmont itself! Needless to say, ALL Belmont
transmitters were wiped out.

Here's something which occurred to me today, something I was *accused* of recently (in a friendly way), I am fast becoming addicted to logging as many stations as possible. Understanding the area where the propagation is coming from is very important, as I have said several times, so the more loggings the better, but I think about those people among us who like to *listen* to a station, rather than go up and down the band to see what else is coming through. There really is nothing wrong with either style, but I think my contesting on the ham bands a few years ago has encouraged me to enjoy adding as much as possible to my personal logbook. I am not bothered about listening to the programme content of a DX station. I just want to zoom up and down the band and discover what other possibilities there are.

Well. Today saw a proper, full-on mid-season styled Es opening.

Here's something which occurred to me today, something I was *accused* of recently (in a friendly way), I am fast becoming addicted to logging as many stations as possible. Understanding the area where the propagation is coming from is very important, as I have said several times, so the more loggings the better, but I think about those people among us who like to *listen* to a station, rather than go up and down the band to see what else is coming through. There really is nothing wrong with either style, but I think my contesting on the ham bands a few years ago has encouraged me to enjoy adding as much as possible to my personal logbook. I am not bothered about listening to the programme content of a DX station. I just want to zoom up and down the band and discover what other possibilities there are.

The 2014 Sporadic *Tease* Season
Around this time of year some DXers start complaining that the sporadic E season isn't very good. Others say it has been about average, etc. You get the idea. I think it comes of all of us expecting more and more each year. But let's be honest, last year most of us in the UK were spoilt with a bombardment of E skip on band 2 almost every day between the end of April and the beginning of August. Many DXers agreed that 2013 was our best ever band 2 sporadic E season on record.
It was very different in the USA. They were complaining that it was their worst season ever! Back in north-eastern Europe, I remember a couple of Finnish express their dismay regarding the lack of Es too.
It's always the same. Some areas win, and some lose. This year in the UK, we are noticing that the Es clouds have mainly been across into eastern Europe. By comparison, UK DXers feel like they have been left out of the picture. Has it really been that bad?
Well, the 2014 sporadic E season began here on band 2 on April 26th, the same day it started in 2013. For me, the only difference between this year and last is that the 2013 E season continued with gusto once it had started, whereas the 2014 season didn't. Although it started early, it fizzled a little here and there, went up and down a bit and then gradually declined in activity towards the end of May. But like I say, it all depends on where you live, so some of the facts I am giving will be disputed. I compared my personal 2014 Es log with the same from 2013, looking at the same time period, April 26th to May 31st.
Number of Es loggings, April 26th>May 31st 2014 = 457
Number of Es loggings, April 26th>May 31st 2013 = 830
Days with sporadic E activity, based on personal logbook entries = 2014 = 17
Days with sporadic E activity, based on personal logbook entries = 2013 = 19
There have been other E openings this year where I haven't managed to log a single station, so the number of days is about the same.
After studying the above figures, 2014 really doesn't seem to be all that bad. It's probably about the same as your average Es season. Loggings are less than 50% down on 2014. The main difference for me has been that the 2014 openings have been shorter, generally less intense (apart from two particular openings where strong signals spread to 108 MHz.), but most annoyingly, the MUF has generally stayed right down at the bottom band 2. Even the OIRT openings have been scarce. It's easy to "blink and miss it"!
One thing has become very clear this season and it is something I have not experienced before, is that I am feeling a good deal of frustration with the lack of Es which has been growing by the day. But why? This seems like a fairly average season so far. After some thought, I have to conclude that I have been sitting by the radio, day after day, leaving the propagation maps open on the computer and making regular spot checks on the bands. I realised I have spent a lot more time looking for DX than I have actually listening to it, and this is the cause of my frustration.
I hope things improve as the last few days really are showing signs of a general decline with a constant teasing of weak and brief openings. As always, we try to convince ourselves not to write off the season just yet. It may well throw up one or two pleasant surprises, and of course we all hope it will.

We might also have assumed that the Es season would pick up as we head towards June. Not the case in the UK at all! The Es are actually going downhill. BUT, there's so much uncertainty with Es and they could pick up any day. There's still plenty of time.

A weak tropo into northern Germany with only Steinkimmen at RDS levels. No tropo in the direction of Denmark or Norway apart from the usual scatter to Rangstrup and Bjerkreim.
I briefly observed a spell of tropo around late afternoon where parts of Holland were enhanced to 41dB - the strongest tropo experienced so far at the new QTH! Pity I wasn't able to listen at the time.

I was stunned to hear Radio Tataouine coming through by meteor scatter this evening. This is another new personal record, but I can't help but think that the existing sporadic E event between East Sussex and Italy might have had a hand in it, which the path would have intersected. I realised who it was straight away and re-checked the streams. There was no question, Radio Tataouine had the same male caller, exhibiting exactly the same mannerisms. I could scarcely believe my ears as the Zarzis transmitter is 2342 km from here! Naturally I wasn't recording at the time, but I am determined to grab a recording of this in the days ahead, in the same way I caught Club Bam Bam earlier with the web stream running alongside.

** Personal Skegness 'First' via meteor scatter
A fruitful day, not just for sporadic E, but also for general scatter with some good distances acheived once again. The current pattern of the weather is one of low pressure and, since Denmark and Norway are now received almost every day when I check for them, I think I can conclude that they are definitely both being received by general scatter.
Two highlights for me were receiving Bavaria on Es. Most of the stations 'got away', with the exception of Bayern 2, Wendelstein on 89.5. The other was the reception of Radio Gardena in the Tirol/Dolomite region of Bolzano. This station is familiar to me as I stayed in the picturesque village of Ortesei Sankt Ulrich some years ago. I remember listening to several radio stations in this region, some of which I *think* were broadcasting in the Laden language. Maybe there are even a few more stations in there I missed (hint, hint ;O)

** Personal Skegness 'First' via meteor scatter
A fruitful day, not just for sporadic E, but also for general scatter with some good distances acheived once again. The current pattern of the weather is one of low pressure and, since Denmark and Norway are now received almost every day when I check for them, I think I can conclude that they are definitely both being received by general scatter.
Two highlights for me were receiving Bavaria on Es. Most of the stations 'got away', with the exception of Bayern 2, Wendelstein on 89.5. The other was the reception of Radio Gardena in the Tirol/Dolomite region of Bolzano. This station is familiar to me as I stayed in the picturesque village of Ortesei Sankt Ulrich some years ago. I remember listening to several radio stations in this region, some of which I *think* were broadcasting in the Laden language. There was some unusual language around the time of this logging and more can be heard on my video at: http://vimeo.com/96703804. Maybe there are even a few more stations in there I missed (hint, hint ;O)
