My First Japanese Reception!

Fukuoka City, Japan
Fukuoka City, Japan

Japan has always been a difficult country to receive in the UK, however, I 'dared' to assume that I would probably receive it one day because my east coast location gives me an extra lift in towards the far east.

Despite living on the east coast for three years however I was beginning to think it was never going to happen. Chinese signals come through in abundance at home on my northerly flag and especially on the BOG (Beverage On the Ground) I occasionally lay out in the marshlands of The Wash, just a few miles down the coast. Nothing! Just a few vague time signals which could have easily been Korean or Taiwanese.

This changed today when JOIF Fukuoka came in on 1413 kHz, but had it not been for the eagle-eared Paul Logan in Northern Ireland, I would never have known what I had missed. I had posted a link to my Perseus SDR file for 1700 to the SkywavesDX group. Paul missed two stations I had overlooked. One of which was JOIF. Click on the link below to hear how it sounded:

To think, I completely overlooked this. I was actually trying to hear what was happening underneath this signal, assuming it was just a European station. I have a rough idea of what Japanese sounds like too.

After posting a recording if this to the Real DX group I received a confirmation from member Hirpyuki Okamura that the language was Japanese. "O-Dori - No All Night Niiphon" was spoken which is a networked programme from 1242 JOLF. Although no local ID was heard there's nothing else this could be. JOIF is the only station from Japan on 1413.

My best afternoon of Asiatic DX ever - and this includes my BOG trips just down the coast.

Japan is a new country here and one I have never heard domestically, other than on short wave. I think there were other Japanese and Korean signals in too but the vocals were never clear enough to be certain.

HLAZ 1566 was good at times. Long time no hear for this one and it's the first time I have heard it at home in Skegness.

Good DX!

Conditions remain very poor to North America, but a new Cuban struggled its way though on 610. Three sites are listed: Bueycito with 10kW, Cienfuegos with 10kW and Guane with 1kW. This was competing with a presumed WIOD with its Fox Sports News programming.

Not a lot ...

Not a lot to report after the overnight geomagnetic disturbance, but TWR Asia from Kyrgyzstan put in a nice signal at 1700 today:

1467 TWR Asia, Krasnaya Rechka 1700 15-10-13

1521 CRI Urumqi was audible at 1400 but was quickly overtaken by Saudi Arabia a couple of hours later.

Good DX!

The X band has been hopeless here this season but I managed to squeeze out two weak IDs today.

I haven't been through my recent Asiatic DX recordings but I might make a few notes later. There have been LOTS of CNR outlets and a few South Koreans, going by the time signals, but little in the way of vocals IDs.

High latitude DX might have been dashed for a few days again as more geomagnetic disturbances take hold. Once again they seem to have been more intense than were forecast.

Putting the above loggings down as firsts as I have never logged them from home before, only on BOG DX trips to The Wash.

I believe the 1359 site is Golmud though I don't see it listed in MW List. Can anybody confirm this?

Other oriental stations heard were as follows - all at 1700:

 558 Chinese pips
729 Japanese time signal? (no S Korea listed here)
738 Xinjiang RGD 738 Zonghe, Kashgar or Urumqi
891 Chinese pips. Chinese/oriental music. Possible South Korean time signal too
 963 Chinese pips
981 Four or five lots of Chinese pips
1413 Chinese pips
1494 Chinese pips x 2
1539 Chinese pips

North America was relatively poor overnight.

An improvement! It seems a while since I have heard North American signals like this. New York City stations were particularly good overnight between 0300 and 0600.

More good news in that 0700 is now waking up.

Other observations:

It was a more Florida morning this time with quite a few bits and pieces of audio from the more regular Florida stations. Although I didn't ID them, look for 610 WIOD Miami, 1020 WURN Kendall and 1360 WKAT (Spanish religion - IDs as Radio Luz). I think they were all present this morning, particularly at 0300.

1200 WXKS is becoming one of the strongest and most regular North Americans. This can be heard with Bloomberg IDs on the hour.

I will be looking towards the far east this afternoon.

It was a struggle to hear this. WCMN used to be a regular pest too. It's exotic DX now!

What has happened to the conditions? The indices are low but the DX keeps getting less and less. North America is almost non-existent with nothing getting through from NYC or NE Canada. Only one heard this morning on 1540, the station with the "your ideas matter" slogan at the top of the hour. There's never an ID with this one.

Only one other station of interest heard overnight on 1390 at 0500. Perhaps WISA Isabella with back-to-back Spanish slow/love songs. No IDs.
