How many days of tropo was that? From the 02-07-13 to 12-07-13 (minus the 4th) so eight days unbroken tropo and ELEVEN if you include the 4th as I'm sure there was some lesser activity on that date. Even eight days is the longest spell of tropo I can remember. We have been truly spoilt.

The tropo has gone today though. The colder weather we have been experiencing has gone away now and the Lincolnshire coast got up to 26 degrees today, burning away any remaining tropo. I see it continues elswhere so I presume it is shooting over me now.

I wonder if it will lift up again later?

The forecast suggested a BIG tropo to Norway this morning but it was some way below that here. The opening covered a wider area than on the 8th and signals reached three bars from many of the bigger transmitters, but the locals were very weak indeed, such as Radio Lyngdal, which was crystal clear and with RDS on the 8th.

For this log, I decided to avoid repetition and concentrated on the Norwegian side of the tropo, plus any other DX which hadn't been logged in the previous few days, but many Danish and German stations were still coming through with decent strengths.

I logged two new Norwegian locals which were very weak indeed and I had to take extra care that I was 100% correct, so a lot of checking against the web streams was necessary.

I also noted that all the local stations I heard are in coastal areas of south-west Norway, which would make sense.


FANTASTIC to see many of the above getting right across to the west and south of England, especially Radio Lyngdal with Andy in Shropshire. I know from the chat room that Jim in Bournemouth was hearing the Norwegians when they had dipped right down here. I guess the duct was moving around. Excellent stuff indeed!

It's all getting a bit much now :O) This has been the summer of non-stop DX!

We have been so lucky to have enjoyed superb tropo here without interference from sporadic E (you should never mix them ;O) I have spent so much time at the radio, logging furiously and making many recordings of the DX, that I have now got a little behind (but no-one's perfect ,lol) Joking aside, I actually decided to switch off the receivers this morning during an intense sporadic E opening to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. It was frustrating too as there was still good tropo to Scandinavia amd Germany which was getting buried by the E skip. Then the internet collapsed, as it did yesterday, so I was unable to access FM List, etc. By the time it was working again I decided to take a look at the Es and start logging again, but found I needed a break from it. Do you ever get like this when the DX is so intense? So I then make the decision to either switch off or concentrate on spot frequencies, like I am now while typing this. I am monitoring a couple of frequencies just in case the Canaries appear.

There are a lot of other domestic things I need to catch up with too. I'd also like to find time to re-design my website (again) but that will have to wait, or be done bit by bit.

Did that really happen? Without doubt, this is the best tropospheric enhanced I have personally experienced. Continental signals were so strong you could easily think you were living in Germany, Denmark or Holland when you tuned across the FM dial as my local Lincolnshire and Norfolk stations simply buckled under the weight of the DX!

There are 61 personal tropo firsts in today's log and I am so glad I took time to make recordings.

Undoubtedly the highlight was my reception of the 50 watt Bad Bentheim transmitter of N-Joy on 93.4 - this is only N-Joy listed on the frequency. Recording below.

After discussing this enhancement with a few other DXers it seems that it compares favourably to the mega-tropo of 10-10-10, though some say that was not quite so intense or widespread. It depends on location and personal experience of course, but it shows you what can happen, given the right conditions. This tropo was only strength five or six, according to the Hepburn forecast. Can you imagine what those intense 11s and 12s, and above, are like in the Mediterranean?

This has been the first 'proper' tropo to fully try out my Körner 9.2 antenna and, for example, I can see the advantages when needing to null Belgium when Holland is competing. At 170 degrees I have northern France. Moving anticlockwise to 140 degrees I can single out Belgium. For Holland and northern Germany it's 90 degrees, while Denmark and Norway can be separated quite comfortably again. Strong signals spread a little more of course, but even in the vertical plane I found the 9.2 was more than acceptable in its ability to separate Denmark and Holland or Holland and Belgium.

What a day! It began shortly after midnight with what I thought was just extremely good tropo. SR P1 had appeared on 87.6, but it quickly shot up to three bars with RDS, so I knew it was more than tropo. I remembered seeing the Es paths over northern Europe on the DX Maps 6m page and realised they were auroral Es. It never really took off here though, extending only to 90.8 MHz.

The highlight for me was Radio Kreiz Breizh from Carhaix on 99.4. While weak, as you can hear on the recording, I remember this one being very difficult one to receive in the south-west of Brittany and always assumed it didn't get out very well. I am very pleased to have received it here. It only uses 500 watts.

Some of today's DX has been the strongest I have known here, particularly the Dutch DX, but Germany has been disappointing, apart form the odd exception.

Wow! This has turned into a non-stop DX-fest! Some excellent ducting throughout the day with surprisingly good signals from Spain, even over into the Galicia region. Strongest station has been Gaztea from Bilbao on 94.7 with three bars and RDS on the XDR. Scandinavia came in too, plus there were some auroral Es very late into the night which I will include with tomorrow's log. Also low power Breton stations came in during the early hours.
