** Personal Skegness 'First'

This Scandinavian opening was yet another pleasant surprise of the season. I was searching for tropo, not expecting any Es, but while looking for Denmark I noticed Finland was coming in at the bottom of the band. Then the opening got closer, travelling westward over Sweden and Norway. It was an opening of mostly higher powered outlets and managed to spread up to 105.2. Definitely the best Scandinavian Es I have ever experienced! I finally received the Aaland Islands for the first time ever too!

Back to the tropo now, what little there is left. It's fading away quite rapidly now.

The Es didn't really get going and the above three loggings were just about all that came through.

The evening tropo began earlier today but despite some strong signals, mostly from Holland tonight, it didn't develop any further into the late evening. Signals generally tapered off from around 2100. Denmark and Germany didn't come up with the big signals I was hoping for.

Continental Regulars

People ask me what constitutes "typical" continental reception here. The obvious answer is to tell them that reception varies, sometimes considerably. It can change from one hour to the next. It changes over a period of weeks too, depending on the weather. It can even change on an annual basis, depending on things like variable sea temperatures. This part of the North Sea is very shallow, being only 50 metres at its deepest, so the water can warm up quickly in the summer. It can even freeze over in the waters around The Wash during winter. Nothing is that predictable here.

Sometimes conditions favour reception of the northern half of France, going right down to the Bourgogne and Centre Regions. Some days conditions might only favour nearer coastal regions such as Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Picardie, the two Normandies and Bretagne. Sometimes even Nord-Pas-de-Calais can be difficult, particularly in the colder winter months. Belgium and Holland are quite consistent, being slightly closer. Germany can be quite good at times with several transmitters often providing daily, fluttery reception, peaking noise-free on occasion, even to more central parts such as Brocken and Torfhaus. On higher ground in the Lincolnshire Wolds, only seven miles inland, it is possible to receive the Thuringen region with noise free peaks - not at home so far sadly. Luxembourg is regular on 89.9, 100.7 and sometimes 107.7 MHz. Denmark is almost a no-go without some additional tropospheric ducting whereas it was a regular along the Suffolk coast (Rangstrup). As an extreme, under exceptional scatter conditions one day during the late summer of 2012 I heard the Bjerkreim transmitter from Norway on 91.8, but the reception was very weak indeed. "Barely audible", in fact.

In the UK, Wales is present constantly when beaming to the west west and not just the higher power transmitters. Southern Scotland too, but only the higher power main transmitters in southern Scotland, plus Meldrum near Aberdeen, thanks to the sea path. Northern Ireland has not made it at all, not even with tropo, but high power transmitters in the Irish Republic can be a daily affair during warmer weather. These include Mount Leinster, Three Rock and Kippure.

The real benefit of living on the Lincolnshire coast is the emptiness of the FM band which allows so many possibilities. The situation is different further down the east coast in Norfolk and Suffolk where more continental stations are heard and with greater signal strengths and so they can become channel blockers.

So, here is a list of continental stations which are present under average daily 'fair weather' scatter conditions (387 of them!). This includes stations which are very weak but are sufficient to provide an easy comparison with their web streams. Red colouring indicates the most regular which consistently peak to noise free levels. Somteimes, my regular German stations can be blocked due to an increase in local QRN. I have still included those which used to be consistently heard before I got this noise problem in order to give you an idea of the reception here.

It may be necessary to sit on the frequency and wait for some of these stations to fade in, but you don't usually have to wait more than a couple of minutes with most stations. Examples of my typical scatter reception can be found by clicking here

Unusual Short Range Tropo

As noticed by a fellow band 2 DXer in Kent, there have been some very strong signals from the nearby continent over the last few days. It must be down to tropospheric enhancement though I was wondering if it had anything to do with my recent aerial upgrades and improvements, both at home and in the car, where I have built a semi-permanent quarter wave/magnet mount. The effect seems to have been observed only along the east coast.

Jet stream position: 06-06-13

Some of this will probably be down to the movement of the jet stream which has moved a long way to the north of the UK for the last few days, allowing warmer air to come up from the south. Temperatures have only been mid-teens however. The "British Summer", as some love to call it, can throw up many surprises. Temperatures could be in the 30s C soon and then snowing a week later ;O) Totally unpredictable!
