** Personal Skegness 'First'
The above log does not show the complete picture, for the Italian
opening around local midday was intense to say the least! Signals were
reaching a full five bars on the Kenwood KT6040 in it's widest (250 kHz)
bandwidth! There were so many stations across the band that it became
impossible to listen to anything as they battled for dominance. The band
became white noise at times and all my local Belmont transmissions
became wiped out. The really annoying thing was that, in the event of me
being able to identify anything, there were multiple transmitters of
that station on the frequency, which is so typical of many Italian
openings. The opening was so intense that I gave up and got something to
eat instead.
Then it was the turn of Portugal and Spain, both shooting up to the top
of the band with intense signals. This time it wasn't quite such a pea
souper and I grabbed a few recordings of IDs. Local stations from Madrid
crowded the top of the band while many stations from Galicia covered
the rest of the band. Another first class spopradic E opening!

Skegness Beaches - Among The Tidiest
The Skegness Standard reports that Skegness beaches were among the tidiest visited in a nationwide clean-up operation led by an environmental charity last year.
The Marine Conservation Society’s figures, published today revealed that just two bags of litter were collected on the half kilometre stretch of Central Beach visited for the annual Beachwatch Big Weekend volunteer tidy-up in 2012.
With beaches elsewhere in the country yielding more than 20 times that level of litter, East Lindsey District Council is delighted with the results.

Not a bad day with Spain and Portugal dominating for a few hours. Conditions never attempted to advance up the band though.
I would have had some recordings too but the computer locked up when I tried installing a new RTL dongle. Some very odd things happened to my laptop and my desktop computers when I tried, and failed to, install the drivers. In the end I lost my entire recording of today's sporadic E event and a few prize IDs.
Yes, I have another dongle but I don't think I'll bother with it for a while. It was supposed to be an RTL2832U/R280T type. Actually, it might be, but there is no indication of this anywhere on it. I didn't expect miracles for £4 from eBay China though. It doesn't have the Belling Lee socket as I had expected, only a tiny push-on mini-whip connection.

Scatter improved a little for me around mid-morning and late afternoon.
It was also a good day for DX in the OIRT band with sustained signals for much of the afternoon. After complaining of S9+40dB of noise across the OIRT band I discovered the signals were actually able to overcome most of this when tuning in narrowband FM.
Meteor scatter was good, particularly earlier in the day. with frequent, very short, sharp bursts for much of the day.
As posted earlier, it seems I wasn't the only one who reported hearing UR 1 from Yalta today. The FMList shows Matthias Mayer in Germany also logged it one minute earlier, but I have reservations.
The frequency on which I heard UR 1 was 67.74 and not 67.73 as it appears in the log - supposedly the correct frequency for Yalta. FM List corrects the frequency if you insert an incorrect adjacent frequency. So, for starters, we have to assume that Yalta was 0.01 MHz high.
When I thought I'd had UR 1 Yalta earlier there was also a powerful signal from UR 1's Khmel'nyts'kyy (is it really spelt like that?) transmitter on 67.70 which was spreading widely in wideband FM mode on the Icom IC7000. On switching this to narrowband FM I could cleanly separate UR 1 67.74 from 67.70. I wondered if 67.74 might have been a product of some sort from 67.70.
The second time I heard UR 1 on 67.74 I forgot to check 67.70 to see if it was that. So next time I hear 67.70 I will attempt to rle it out by tuning to 67.74 to see if it is still present.
For now, I will put this log on hold until I next hear Khmel'nyts'kyy on 67.70.

Scatter improved a little for me around mid-morning and late afternoon.
It was also a good day for DX in the OIRT band with sustained signals for much of the afternoon. After complaining of S9+40dB of noise across the OIRT band I discovered the signals were actually able to overcome most of this when tuning in narrowband FM.
Meteor scatter was good, particularly earlier in the day. with frequent, very short, sharp bursts for much of the day.
As posted earlier, it seems I wasn't the only one who reported hearing UR 1 from Yalta today. The FMList shows Matthias Mayer in Germany also logged it one minute earlier, but I have reservations.
The frequency on which I heard UR 1 was 67.74 and not 67.73 as it appears in the log - supposedly the correct frequency for Yalta. FM List corrects the frequency if you insert an incorrect adjacent frequency. So, for starters, we have to assume that Yalta was 0.01 MHz high.
When I thought I'd had UR 1 Yalta earlier there was also a powerful signal from UR 1's Khmel'nyts'kyy (is it really spelt like that?) transmitter on 67.70 which was spreading widely in wideband FM mode on the Icom IC7000. On switching this to narrowband FM I could cleanly separate UR 1 67.74 from 67.70. I wondered if 67.74 might have been a product of some sort from 67.70.
The second time I heard UR 1 on 67.74 I forgot to check 67.70 to see if it was that. So next time I hear 67.70 I will attempt to rle it out by tuning to 67.74 to see if it is still present.
For now, I will put this log on hold until I next hear Khmel'nyts'kyy on 67.70.

At last, the new antenna is installed, thanks to Andy "radioredcat" who braved the elements (it was very windy as you will hear in the video) to raise the antenna just enough to clear the rooftop as it was almost scraping it when vertical.
The upper and lower reflectors had also been mounted on the outside of the reflector boom (I had overlooked this when following the instructions) and the overall difference in reception is quite impressive and clearly noticeable. It's amazing how much difference one metre can make.
Gain is improved but I am no longer able to take Belmont down to a low, noisy level, presumably because the extra height. Belmont is only 39 kilometers away and can be seen from the rooftop.
Because the antenna is now higher above the rooftop it is able to function more naturally. However, it's always interesting to note there are usually subtle differences when you move any antenna and this can throw up some interesting things. Stations which could easily be nulled before become slightly more difficult to null and spread across a wider beamwidth, while it's vice versa for other stations. Weird how these things happen, but it's just a simple case of the antenna functioning more naturally now.
What impresses me more than anything is the continental scatter which now just lifts right out of the noise almost instantly and become noise free. I will get some recordings of this over the coming days to demonstrate. My old Triax FM5 would often struggle to achieve the same.
I still have my noise across much of the band but it seems slightly quieter at times and isn't so much of a problem at the edges of band 2. Hopefully this will improve soon as it can be a DX killer at times.

Dutch Pirate Radio
Have you ever heard those Dutch pirate stations just above the top of medium wave? They exist on band 2 too! I can often hear some of them pushing through here, playing the usual mix of traditional Dutch music, but they are mostly well down in the noise.
They tend to use certain frequencies, presumably to avoid causing QRM to the legal stations. The most common frequencies are 96.5, 97.0, 97.3, but I have heard them elsewhere, including 87.5, 95.0, 99.5, 104.0 and 108.0.

They tend to use certain frequencies, presumably to avoid causing QRM to the legal stations. The most common frequencies are 96.5, 97.0, 97.3, but I have heard them elsewhere, including 87.5, 95.0, 99.5, 104.0 and 108.0.

Skegness Log: 05-05-13
It's unusual to have such a good sporadic E opening this early in the season! I won't allow myself to assume that this will continue non-stop throughout the summer now. Sporadic E has a habit of dropping the odd surprise like this. Here's my log:

Several other instances of E251 were stored on 87.7 which I have left out the log. This seems to be my regular on 87.7, maybe because I tend to beam SSW to avoid the noise I now have when beaming NE to S. I don't think SSW is a good direction for MS.
I did a little better with meteor scatter overnight. My laptop seems to "sleep" when it has been inactive for 20 minutes or so and I have been wondering if this could be a reason why I have not done so well with this mode. I would have thought that the hard drive would wake up and store any RDS data registered by RDS Spy, but maybe there are other things which have been powering down because of periods of inactivity.
I looked into this and Windows 7 has an system "service" which runs in the background called "Superfetch". Apparently this overrides the settings in your Control Panel and powers down your hard drives (and other services?) EVEN when they have been set under the Control Panel NEVER to sleep. I made sure the Superfetch had been disabled and three MS loggings resulted. Coincidence? It could have simply been good meteor scatter conditions which were responsible of course. Hopefully this info about "Superfetch" will be of use.
