I actually slept with the laptop next to me overnight so I could check DX Maps for any increase in the MUF. Once I saw a path open up to the east I was out of bed in a flash!

Summarising, the day was split into four Es openings:

The OIRT band bad Belarus, Ukraine and Russia around 0800. Those were the strongest Es of the day. There was some activity on band 2 but it was shortlived and very weak.

A second and unexpected opening (DX Maps didn't suggest any obvious activity at the time) occirred around local midday to Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

The third opening was a very weak opening to Finland. All stations had to be identified by web streams.

Finally, the band struggled to open again during the early evening to Algeria and Spain.

Good DX!

Sporadic E 2013: Mid Season Analysis

Sporadic E 2013: Mid Season Analysis

Personally, this has been the best sporadic E season I have known on the FM broadcast band. I will try to be more specific, but suffice to say there has been a lot more of it! Here is a brief, non-technical analysis.

The main factor has been the almost daily occurrence of E skip reaching 88 MHz and above.

Signal strengths have generally been quite weak when the MUF has only reached the lower section of the band - up to 94 MHz or so. By "weak", I refer to zero to two bars on the signal meter on the KT6040. When the Es have extended to the top of the band I tend to find that the Es can reach good levels, sometimes qite strong, reaching a full five bars on the KT6040 and across the whole band. So strong that they can sometimes take out my local Belmont transmitter!

There have been many more days than usual where the Es have flirted with the bottom of the band, never amounting to much and which haven't developed into a full-scale band-wide opening. While this has been frustrating, I think it is an indication that the MUF has generally been much higher, because those 'flirty' Es would be zero Es in other years.

Another curious factor of this year's Es season was its early start. I have been joking that the season peaked in late April, but that isn't far from the truth. May had some excellent openings too, but June, while still being very good, has seen a gradual decline in those strong, band-wide openings.

The pattern of Es seems to have been more predictable this year, with morning openings, typically between 07:00 and 10:00. Then evening openings typically between 17:00 and 20:00. Sporadic E can happen at any time and while these are the traditional peak times for sporadic E, the regularity of this has been obvious, with very little variation.

As for anything unusual, only one thing springs to mind, though I doubt it means anything. There have been more instances of openings into the Atlantic with the Canaries being received on two occasions (double hop, but perhaps more likely Es to Portugal and tropo the rest of the journey) and the Azores has been received several times. Openings into the Atlantic are often missed as there are no warning signs. What would you receive if the band was open into a body of water? Nothing! Then suddenly the Azores appear out of nowhere.

There have been more instances of Greece and the Balkans this season too, plus my first possible reception of turkey on 98.0 with a tentative Radyo Cihan from Canakkale on 98.0. Greece and the Balkans were present across much of band 2 at the time. I have noticed that the Es clouds have regularly been producing high MUFs over eastern Europe and this has given me these Es when the clouds have gradually drifted westward.

The highlight for me has been the sheer number of loggings. I have amassed 2572 individual sporadic E loggings at June 30th, the most I have ever had for a single season and we're only about half way through it!

My notes will be meaningless to most people since sporadic E is just that ... "sporadic". There is no way of predicting who receives what and when. Some people get it, others don't. Take the experience of the USA this year. A DXer in the north-east of the US recently told me that they haven't had an Es season so far and that there has been only one day of decent band 2 Es to shout about. Europe has been awash with Es, regularly spreading up into the 2m amateur band!

So, as always, what is an excellent season for some, will have been a lesser season for others. That's sporadic E for you.

As a late starter I often arive after the event. Today was one morning I really didn't want to lie in, but I did. Judging by the number of auto-logged Balkans on 87.6 it looks like I could have missed the best Balkan opening of the season.

Then came this afternoon. I had high hopes for good conditions after watching the Es build over central Europe on the DX clusters. In the end it looks like I was right on the edge of the opening most of the time. There was some DX to Poland, Moscow, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia and Italy, but the loggings came in at the rate of just over one per hour. Frustrating, but at least there were Es.

A sudden drop in the MUF at 1945 has enabled me to prepare today's loggings a little earlier than usual. Maybe an early night tonight!

Today's opening to the Azores was even better than the last with a few new frequencies. There were several stations I couldn't identify though because of a lack of working web streams but I'm sure Madeira was present and possibly Cape Verde. From memory I had Portuguese stations on 89.0, 91.6 & 92.7. I forget the others. Also it seems I lost one logging of Canal FM, not sure where that disappeared to. Presumably I thought I had entered it into the log when I hadn't.

There were a few new Moroccans too, including a low power outlet of Medradio on 88.0 which I had assumed to be the Spanish Sahara. Both were carrying very similar programmes but after checking the web streams it was clear which one I was receiving.

Nice to get back into carrier monitoring on band 1. My little half wave dipole seems to be doing the trick. A presumed Jordanian carrier was seen at  55.249.875. As Jurgen said, nothing was received on E2 or E4 at the time. My calibration will probably be out slightly as I have nothing with which to calibrate against so please excuse any small inaccuracy. Once I'd received the JRTV1 carrier I looked at their audio on 60.75 but the MUF never got that high at the time. Greece slowly appeared on band 2 a few minutes later, together with one or two mysteries.

Is this Turkish?

It is not the first time I have heard this station when Greece has been present.

A bit of live meteor scatter and a bandscan of aircraft scatter while the Es MUF has subsided. Scatter conditions have shown some signs of improving after a lull for several days. The weather has been slightly warmer at 19 degrees, a few degrees higher than the forecast had predicted. Hopefully there will be some tropo over the coming days as that high pressure system moves closer.

The Scientists Are Wrong!

Based on a recent NASA article about this year's earlier appearance of noctilucent clouds, speculation has been mounting about a possible correlation between these and the unusually early start to the sporadic E season. As DXers, we know this is not the case.

The reason for this year's vigourous Es season has been largely due to the massive summer hit "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk. Haven't you noticed the enormous amount of airplay this song has when there is an opening? It's more than coincidence that this song is playing constantly on every single radio station when the Es are present.

Professor Bodd Foxe of the University of Wallamaloo has studied these effects and concludes that the song exhibits certain vibrational effects which could be heating up the ionosphere. It was initially thought that only DXers with super-high gain equipment living on the east coast of Australia would be able to hear this, but signals have been so strong that ordinary, less well placed DXers have been able to enjoy frequent sporadic E event too.

DXers should be aware of the claim of intense Es in February of this year, made by south coast DXer Dick Farlon, reporting reception of Pakistan on band 2. Columbia Records were quick to point out that the Daft Punk single hadn't been released at that time.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to the next single from Daft Punk called "This Is The Best Medium Wave DX Season Ever", due to be released at the autumnal equinox. We wish them every success with that.

Thanks to Daft Punk, it looks like we are all Getting Lucky with the DX this year!

Which Radio Maria Am I Receiving?

I had an interesting telephone conversation with a friend and fellow DXer today and we were discussing the FM List website. Of the things we discussed, he asked me if I knew for certain which transmitter sites I was receiving and could I be wrong with some of them. I tried to answer his question and I think some of the points we discussed are worth mentioning.

So there's an opening to Italy and I get a signal on 107.9 from Radio Maria. How do I know which of the billions of transmitters I am receiving? I don't - initially anyway, but after some time it can become apparent which transmitter it is. It is also possible that mistakes can be made, but with a little care and experience, I think it's possible to be almost 100% certain with this in most situations.

You also have to be aware that the DX path can change, so you realise nothing can be absolutely guaranteed, but there is a logic to this. Italy is the best example. Finding a station with multiple transmitters on one frequency is common.

The Radio Maria network is one of the best examples of multiple sites-per-frequency I can think of. You could also look at RAI stations, where there could be dozens of low power relays on a single frequency, together with one or more higher powered outlets. It is important not to assume that you are always receiving the highest powered transmitter on the frequency. Sporadic E openings can be very confined, allowing reception of only a small town or city. Of course, sometimes you could be receiving a wide area, including several regions. So what needs to be done to ensure the correct transmitter is logged?

To begin with, I might check a DX Cluster. DX Maps is a good place to start. There are various others too, but they all tend to be interlinked these days. Just keep your eye on them and check they are updated regularly. For sporadic E on VHF band 2 you need to be checking the 50, 70, "FM DX" and 144 MHz pages. Look to see where the paths are open to.

OK, so I now know that the band is open to southern areas if Italy. I am still no wiser regarding my Radio Maria transmitter. My next plan is to consult the FM List. I call up 107.9 and sorted the stations into alphabetical order or "Programme". There are approximately three billion transmitters for Radio Maria on 107.9 (only a slight exaggeration!). My personal experience tells me that Santu Lussurgiu is the most likely candidate but I know Asti is also a possibility. Maybe some of the other low power sites are possible too. My gut reaction at this stage might be to go for Santu Lussurgiu. I click on "Santu Lussurgiu" and get a pop-up menu which lists other stations which use that site. I see there is a higher power outlet of Radio Dimensione Suono on 87.7 and another on 105.8. Let me check them ...... Nope. Nothing there. So maybe I am not receiving Santu Lussurgiu. Still keeping an open mind, I click on Asti and repeat the same procedure. Ah, there is only one station coming from this transmitter - Radio Maria, so this is not helpful. Let's look at Ancona. Bingo! They also have Veronica My Radio on 88.0 and that is coming in too. So the chances are now very strongly in favour of Ancona being the site of my Radio Maria on 107.9. I am now going to tune around the band, looking for other stations coming from this site.

This situation is only going to be successful if a small area of Italy is coming through. When multiple regions and provinces are present there is usually little you can do. Those conditions probably move around so there is still a degree of guesswork to begin with and, as is the case with Italy, many station's sites remain unidentified.

Next thing is to look at the FM List Worldwide Visual Logbook. It is clear to see how the path of DX tends to fall in a straight line. This not only helps increase that percentage of certainty but can also clearly show if you have made a mistake. Having studied propagation paths on FM List for a number of years I can see that these lines of propagation can often reveal the exact are which is being received. There is something called the parallax effect. It's easy to see how this works when you look at the FM List's Visual Logbook. The paths of different DXers intersect in such a way so all those lines meet roughly in the middle, exactly where the refraction point is. On days of multiple Es clouds this positioning becomes blurry as many reception paths open up at the same time.

Two other great benefits of using the FM List are: Once you have logged a particular transmitter, it is highlighted with an orange background on other frequencies where that transmitter exists. Also, future frequency searches are narrowed down to a smaller compass beamwidth, thus eliminating transmitters which are well off beam and therefore probably not coming through.

Don't neglect those PI codes either. You can enter these into FM List and conduct a search to find out which stations use that PI code. Each one is a unique identifier for that station and they are all clues. Sometimes a transmitter might have a local PI code and so you know which site you have received straight away.

Another thing I have found essential to do is log everything! Why? That might sound excessive but it helps to build up an even clearer picture of the propagation path.

This might still not be 100% foolproof due to the sheer number of sites in Italy, but keep all these things in mind and just take your time. I looked at Italy in the example here. Other countries are less complicated. All this comes with experience too I suppose, but these methods form the basis of how I decide which sites I have received.

One other rather more obvious way to identify a site, but one which isn't always available, is to use the AF (Alternative Frequency) list, which is (sometimes) Sometimes it's quite obvious. In the case of me checking a recent meteor scatter bust from Finland on 87.9. The RDS is complete, 6201 and YLE_YKSI. The AF list says "87.9 89.2 93.2 88.5 89.5 90.9 89.8". Clearly this is YLE 1 from one of the two sites listed on 87.9. But which one? Espoo (60 kW) in the south of the country or Ainiovaara (3 kW), half way up the country and on the Swedish border. All those frequencies have transmitters in the near vicinity of Espoo but not of Ainiovaara. It's Espoo!carried within the RDS data.

Another decent day but with weak or very weak signals. A lot of web listening had to be done to confirm stations.

After using RDS Spy v1.00 for a couple of weeks I have to say how much more sentivie it is than v0.99. I thoroughly recommend this. This morning I was getting full PS with signals not even showing any strength on the KT6040.

A frustrating day of mostly very weak Es with signals too low for RDS, though once again there were brief periods when signals were good, mostly with Polish signals. Most of today's signals 'got away'.

It started with OIRT, but I quickly abandoned that when I realised band 2 was active. At the onset of the Greek conditions I heard several very exotic sounding stations at the bottom of the band which I suspect might have been Turkish. Their signals were very weak so no chance of seeing RDS, plus I couldn't find many working Turkish web streams for comparison.

The Danish tropo occurred only at the end of the Es conditions to Latvia and Lithuania and dropped out when they did too!

Good DX!

A solid day of Es, from 0535 to 2033. Signals were generally weak though. I didn't see any full five-bar signals on the KT6040, but the midday Portuguese opening produced some good 'fours'. The same for the evening Italian opening too once the Rome area came in. I suspect this is my largest ever Es log. This, despite having to drag myself away from the receiver from time to time.

Monaco was a new country with RMC Info from Col de la Madone on 98.5!

** One logging I feel slightly uncomfortable about is France Inter from Vallée-de-la-Vésubie (06) on 87.9, although this fits in perfectly with the prevailing conditions. The transmitter is only a measly half a watt! The obvious transmitter of choice would have been Toulouse but that area was not propagating around that time so I think Vallée-de-la-Vésubie may be correct. But come on, half a watt? Really? The transmitter does seem to be on a high mountain, possibly facing this direction. I welcome any comments to the contrary. **

Sadly, today's recording somehow got corrupted. I just checked it to find it had reduced to ten minutes in length. I have no idea what happened to the other eight hours. Grrr!
