** Personal Skegness 'First'

Tropo was a surprise during the late evening of the 21st/early morning 22nd. Signals were not great but the SW2 software revealed a few PI codes. Bonn, Barbelkreuz, Aachen, Munster and Langenberg were also slightly enhanced.

A few bits and pieces about my meteor scatter loggings.

Some of the stations logged share the frequency with other stations on the same network. It can sometimes be a gamble deciding which site has been received. The methods I used to determine the sites involve checking the other frequencies of those transmitters to either confirm or eliminate them, if that makes sense, so just a quick explanation of why I claim to have received certain sites when others might be possible.

At the moment I am reporting many personal firsts from Poland and Finland. My lack of Polish and Finnish meteor scatter loggings in the past have been due to the shortfalls of the StreamWriter software. StreamWriter seemed to be the best software of its kind that I could find, but it was unable to record web streams encoded in the .asx format. These formats are used by the Polish and Finnish national networks so I was never able to record them.

One minor problem with the RDS display on the S2, which you may have noticed, is not having the full eight character PS display when not all eight characters are transmitted, so I am not always able to report accurate positioning of the PS name. For example, if a station has the PS name "__LBC___", the S2 simply displays it as "LBC". This will be rectified if I am ever able to get RDS Spy configured via the SW2 software.

Finally, just to stress the value of the File Analyser software. This comes with SDR Console and has saved me an enormous amount of time. Using File Analyser I can see an image of the whole of an overnight S2 recording. The meteor bursts are easy to see and if I hover my mouse pointer over the burst I can see the exact time it occurred. So I can note down the time of the burst and go straight to it in the SW2 software. I would not consider meteor scatter DXing if I had to play back an entire recording in realtime!

Good DX!
