Personal First (via the respective modes)
Tropospheric:
The trailing end of the tropo from the previous evening. Some nice signals from the likes of Grosser Feldberg and Donnersberg, prodicing quick RDS. French transmitters Troyes and Bourges were the same too. Nice to hear Moseltal for the first time too.
Meteor Scatter:
Difficult to decide if the overnight meteor scatter was better than the previous morning's. I think probably not, as the 15th produced more frequent bursts. I didn't have time to check through everything on the 15th, but managed to check through four of the five hour's worth of recordings this time. The log would have been much shorter were it not for the few stronger bursts. Even these were short-lived, being no more than ten seconds or so duration at best. So still no major Leonid activity, but one or two interesting personal firsts.

** Personal First
Tropospheric:
The tropo was concentrated along southern parts of England throughout most of the day. I was not expecting anything to happen here, but conditions took off in the evening, initially quite slowly with very weak signals. Conditions improved nicely after 2000 with the appearance of RDS on a few transmitters. Sackpfeife and Donnersburg provided the best signals in the low 50s dBf. Conditions then moved around quite quickly, allowing different areas to propagate individually. Also apparent was the instability of some signals, almost like Es at times. I flipped the 9.2 vertical when Bourges was giving instant RDS and I heard many vertical French signals, most from the Lille area, but Holland quickly put paid to the French verticals and so I flipped the 9.2 back to horizontal. The tropo continued nicely into the early hours of the 16th.
Meteor Scatter:
The Leonids may be starting as there was a sizeable increase in activity overnight. Lack of time beat me and I only had time to analyse two of the five hours I recorded. Hoping for more free time tomorrow.

Tropospheric:
The tropo was concentrated along southern parts of England throughout most of the day. I was not expecting anything to happen here, but conditions took off in the evening, initially quite slowly with very weak signals. Conditions improved nicely after 2000 with the appearance of RDS on a few transmitters. Sackpfeife and Donnersburg provided the best signals in the low 50s dBf. Conditions then moved around quite quickly, allowing different areas to propagate individually. Also apparent was the instability of some signals, almost like Es at times. I flipped the 9.2 vertical when Bourges was giving instant RDS and I heard many vertical French signals, most from the Lille area, but Holland quickly put paid to the French verticals and so I flipped the 9.2 back to horizontal. The tropo continued nicely into the early hours of the 16th.
Meteor Scatter:
The Leonids may be starting as there was a sizeable increase in activity overnight. Lack of time beat me and I only had time to analyse two of the five hours I recorded. Hoping for more free time tomorrow.

This wasn't supposed to be a meteor scatter log. I recorded half an hour of the bottom 6 MHz of the band, looking for sporadic E, but it did not materialise in the end. However, when checking back through the recordings, I found several decent meteor pings and so ran them all into RDS Spy. I am glad I did this now.

This wasn't supposed to be a meteor scatter log. I recorded half an hour of the bottom 6 MHz of the band, looking for sporadic E, but it did not materialise in the end. However, when checking back through the recordings, I found several decent meteor pings and so ran them all into RDS Spy. I am glad I did this now.

I think I came into this opening quite late. How long the band had been open I have no idea, but I know other UK DXers had been receiving German signals for several hours. I guess it was just beginning to peak since German signals increased for the first hour, but then faded away abruptly not long after 1400.

I beam towards Denkark and southern Sweden and all I receive is Italy! Oh well.
Very disappointing this morning as hardly any MS activity was detected, plus I ran out of hard drive space again and only got three hours recorded. A bit of file shuffling has now more than doubled my available space up to 850 GB so hopefully more results tomorrow. I will be beaming south-west this time in case the forecast tropo materialises.

Will this tropo ever end? We're into day five now and, yes, it is starting to fizzle, but not without a final blast. Some Germans remain, but my attention has been drawn to Sweden now, which is occupying many frequencies. At least 16 Swedish transmitters were heard around the midday period and there were two or three new ones in there for me, the furthest being the Norrköping transmitter at 1174 km, very close to eastern Swedish coast. You begin to realise that Finland is actually a good contender for band 2 reception one day.
Just before the tropospheric activity disappeared, I managed to hear a very weak Koszalin on 97.4. I followed this for ten minutes, hearing music, an OM and commercials, well down into the noise and barely audible, but unmistakably there.
So, this is the conclusion of yet another amazing spell of band 2 tropospheric activity!

Will this tropo ever end? We're into day five now and, yes, it is starting to fizzle, but not without a final blast. Some Germans remain, but my attention has been drawn to Sweden now, which is occupying many frequencies. At least 16 Swedish transmitters were heard around the midday period and there were two or three new ones in there for me, the furthest being the Norrköping transmitter at 1174 km, very close to eastern Swedish coast. You begin to realise that Finland is actually a good contender for band 2 reception one day.
Just before the tropospheric activity disappeared, I managed to hear a very weak Koszalin on 97.4. I followed this for ten minutes, hearing music, an OM and commercials, well down into the noise and barely audible, but unmistakably there.
So, this is the conclusion of yet another amazing spell of band 2 tropospheric activity!

Welcome to day four of what is turning into one of the strongest tropos I have ever experienced! Lille and Egem have been peaking in the low 70s dBf (Konrad XDR-GTK software).
As with last week's tropo, the band is unrecognisable as being from anywhere within the UK. What has also become apparent is that, during the late evening, signals were so strong that my XDR-F1HD has been experiencing intermodulation products. I have never experienced this kind of thing before with tropospheric activity, but it looks like Tacolneston is to blame as I received a mixture of BBC Radio 2 and something else (BBC Radio 3?) on 87.5. This is likely 89.7 & 91.9 mixing.
Subtract 17 dB from my figures to get a more accurate signal reading. (-20 dB for pre-amp, plus 3 dB for antenna splitter).
Once again I have avoided repetition and only logged the more interesting catches. The band is full of dozens and dozens of stations from Germany, Holland, Belgium and France.

Day three of the current tropo spell and no signs of it abating! If anything, signals are increasing, with some German transmitters reaching high strengths, strong enough to be audible on the car radio in town!
The log of DLR Kultur on 89.0 from Jever was interesting and it took me many minutes to realise what was happening. At first, I couldn't find anything on the web which matched the radio play I was hearing, yet this seemed to be the same radio play I could hear on DLR Kultur 97.4 (Brocken) and 96.5 (Langenberg). After a while, I realised that it 'was' the same play, but 89.0 was almost TEN MINUTES AHEAD! Presumably some audio distribution problem.
Many more regular continental tropo catches were received but I have not included them in the log.

** Personal First
Day three of the current tropo spell and no signs of it abating! If anything, signals are increasing, with some German transmitters reaching high strengths, strong enough to be audible on the car radio in town!
The log of DLR Kultur on 89.0 from Jever was interesting and it took me many minutes to realise what was happening. At first, I couldn't find anything on the web which matched the radio play I was hearing, yet this seemed to be the same radio play I could hear on DLR Kultur 97.4 (Brocken) and 96.5 (Langenberg). After a while, I realised that it 'was' the same play, but 89.0 was almost TEN MINUTES AHEAD! Presumably some audio distribution problem.
Many more regular continental tropo catches were received but I have not included them in the log.
