I spotted this opening just as I was about to go out, so it was another day of playing back recordings later in the day. I was surprised by the number of low power Romanian station I received with full RDS. For instance, 89.5 Radio Brasov Special is listed with only 40 watts. The Galati transmitter is 50 watts and Adjud is 80 watts.

As explained elsewhere, I had only two 'live' loggings from this opening, but all 20 minutes or so were recorded for later playback, where I discovered the rest of the stations. There were also the usual "multi-tx" catches, which I omitted.
I won't be recording and playing back many openings this way as this one took me almost four hours and it was only a meagre opening compared to a mid-season frenzy. It would be sensible to concentrate on recording only the more interesting openings, unless time permits.

The first Es of the season here! Possibly the earliest I have heard Es, though I can't remember if I had some one year at the end of March? I think I might have done. Such is my memory.
It was very much a mediocre 'bottom of the band' opening, with only three stations heard intermittently, lasting about 15 to 20 minutes overall. I am guessing the Radio Algeria International on 88.3 will be Radio El Tarf as this site was in the vicinity of the opening.

FM DXing: Looking To The Future
2015 will be the first season I have used an SDR receiver on band 2 for sporadic E DXing and this new technology slightly fills me with dread. DXing won't be the same. It will be better, potentially, as I will see more of the band and hopefully miss less, but there are a few things which need consideration.
When I look back at "Medium Wave DXing Before Perseus", things were simple. DXing was done on one single frequency. DXing was dramatically improved when I got my Perseus. Suddenly I could see the entire medium wave band and DX every single frequency at the top of the hour, resulting in not just more loggings, but more exotic loggings as I wasn't missing anything. My logbook grew enormously, and so did the amount of time I needed to go through all those files. That's not so bad though as you tend to develop your own strategies for analysing and playing back the files, so I got quicker at it over time.
Now I have the Elad FDM-S2 SDR receiver which is capable of recording more than three times the bandwidth of the Perseus. I have already seen my meteor scatter logbook grow dramatically in size as I am able to analyse almost a third of the band at once. I usually record six or seven hours of band 2 overnight, in four stages. SDR Console's File Analyser software makes reasonably short work of the playback by displaying each 90 minute recording in a long jpg file, so I can see the meteor bursts and jump straight to them, saving a huge amount of time.
So come the sporadic E season, when the band can literally fill up with countless stations, I am going to have a lot of data to go through if I decide to record the band and play back the recordings later. This is not helpful to other DXers as I won't be adding anything to my FM List logbook in realtime. This means there will be no indication on the FM List Visual Logbook that an opening is in existence. At least, not unless I (a) send out DX alerts to the groups, or (b) if I don't log at least a few stations 'live' when I first notice an opening. It is my aim to alert other DXers when an opening occurs, but playing back a recording later isn't going to of any use to other DXers. Hopefully (a) and (b) will rectify that issue. But will I have time for that? Sending out alerts takes time.
Recording DX may be a thing of the past, unless I hear something unusual or exotic. I don't think I'll have the extra time for these things.
These days we have the superb FM List where we can manage our logbooks. This simplifies and organises the data in ways which can speed up the logging process. But, in the same way the Perseus increased the number of loggings on medium wave, the FDM-S2 is going to do the same for FM DX but, potentially, on a much bigger scale. I can see DXers getting hundreds of individual loggings in a single opening this way. With this much extra data, we are going to need an even quicker method of entering those loggings into FM List. Automated logging is the answer, which we now have to a degree, but I worry this will take away the fun of DXing as the hobby will then be more about collecting data as opposed to the thrill of chasing the DX.
Being able to DX 60+ channels simultaneously is going to reveal a lot of DX and I like to log everything as this highlights the precise area of an opening on the map with a nice visible footprint. So I need to find a quicker way to add those logs into FM List. Do I simply enter a station in the FM List logbook without including RDS data or programme details? That will speed things up, but at the expense of not providing useful information which, not only provides useful information about a station, but also verifies what I have received. Perhaps I should leave out signal strength and the time too while I'm at it. No, this is not the way to DX. It's all necessary information. I always do my best to assess the signal strength as accurately as possible in my loggings. Programme information is essential. So what ways are there to speed up the logging process?
It would be nice to have a log entry created from the data received by the SDR receiver itself, or from related software. This could automatically go into a log, ready to upload to FM List later, or maybe even uploaded live as a DX cluster. You'd need to create filters and set parameters in order to make sure that not every single station is reported over and over again. I don't like to see too much repetition in loggings.
This highlights the dilemma. Looking back to last year's E season, (yes, the one which almost everybody described as the worst they'd experienced) I used a method of rapid tuning, staying on a frequency long enough to get the RDS, then quickly moving to the next frequency. I recorded lots of videos, some of which are on my Vimeo page. This method resulted in my biggest ever annual Es logbook! And this was the worst season on record! I was about three weeks behind with my logbook at one point. Now look at how many of us have SDRs. Oh dear! Suddenly, things are going to get more complicated.
Of course, we can keep it simple and DX live, one frequency at a time. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact I am almost tempted to stick to that, but I know curiosity will get the better of me and I will want to record the DX. I know it's not all about quantity, as I have often banged on about, but it's also about not missing that brief exotic opening which might is going to be camouflaged in among the regular stuff. SDRs are definitely a step forward in our DX hobby, but at what expense? I think it's time to take stock and decide which way to go. What will the future of DXing look like?
Did I mention the additional drive space and processing power we are going to need? There's only so much we can record, unless we have an endless supply of hard drives.

I did it! I won a Gold Star award for Outstanding Incompetence. Regarding my comment yesterday about fouling up my overnight recordings three mornings in a row ... well, this morning I actually remembered to plug the antenna into the correct receiver, but I forgot to delete the previous day's recordings, so my hard drive filled up after a few minutes worth of recordings. I think that definitely qualifies for the Gold Star award.
I know the conditions were appalling for a meteor peak as I was awake half the night and I was only aware of one brief meteor ping which affected only one frequency. That's all my MS DXing for a while as I want to be prepared for the Es now. I didn't manage to get the five remaining frequencies for MS: 94.5 98.3 99.3 99.4 & 101.5. Hopefully later in the year when meteor activity improves.
Good DX!

** Personal Skegness 'First'
Good DX!

** Personal Skegness 'First'
Once again, it's a big pat on the back to me for forgetting to swap the antenna cable over from the XDR to the S2. Another six hours of nothing was recorded on what was supposed to be the peak of the April Lyrids. I am going to award myself a gold star if I foul this up three days in a row.
Three hours of daytime recording produced a few catches to make up for this, but I'm not sure this shower really lived up to it's "Major" badge. Meteor activity immediately prior to this seemed lively-ish with the antenna horizontal, so I thought I would risk flipping to vertical to see if I could bag something unusual. There were some long bursts and activity was definitely on the up, but it was all quite disappointing on the whole.
The tropo made up for my meteoric shortcomings with some good signals from Norway and Denmark.

Good DX!

Interference Bursts
I don't think any of us escape interference issues anymore. Unless you live in an isolated environment and are careful about what electrical apparatus you run in your home or shack, I think there will always be something which masks the weakest signals. Along the way, I will add further screen grabs to demonstrate the different types of interference which plague the band here.
Today, I took a screen grab of my most persistent interference problem. I don't know what it is or where it comes from, but it pops up quite regularly, sometimes several times each hour. I haven't bothered with any thorough investigations as it is intermittent and some days doesn't seem to be as frequent. Here is a screen grab I took of this interference this morning.
Wouldn't you just love some of this? What on earth could it be? It's strong enough to create noise with my strongest transmitters. I am so thankful this isn't constant.
Here's another odd one I have come across recently, as highlighted nicely in SDR Data File Analyser:
This one looks like the kind of noise my internet modem/router makes, only it isn't my router. This produces irritating whining sounds on the channel and will mask the weakest signals.
This one is really annoying as it can be very regular. It looks like a thermostat and it is strong enough to wipe out all bu my two strongest transmitters: Belmont and Tacolneston, but it even produces a static sound with these.
This is what I call my Summertime Interference, because it looks like this is a summertime only phenomenon. It's a solid block of noise which affects most of the band but, as you can see, it has a very sharp starting frequency.
Last year I observed this from approximately 200 degrees (south-south-west) between April and October. Then it stopped. It has a very precise on/off pattern, coming on for about five minutes and having a white noise sound, then becoming slightly quieter for the next five minutes and sounding raspy.
It stopped over the winter months but seems to have resurfaced in a slightly different guise. It is now about one minute 'on' and one minute 'off'. It's still the same white noise when it's 'on', but it is completely silent when 'off'. As a guess, I wonder if this might be the product of nearby solar panels charging. Living on England's sunniest coast has its disadvantages if so as solar panels are very popular here.
This one is not as bad as it looks. I can't hear it, only see it. It doesn't seem to present any great problem.
As I drive around town, monitoring continental signals, I am immediately aware of just how much interference there is all around us. It's practically non-stop. Even at my location, which is relatively quiet, I have a subtle white noisy mush in the background all the time. It's only very weak, luckily, and tends to reduce in strength overnight. It's like a living, breathing organism, waiting to surface at random. Some days it's slightly stronger.
At other times I hear random bleeps, buzzes, raspy sounds on individual frequencies, broadband bursts of white noise. All these troublesome creatures are living close by, waiting to pounce.
Having DXed in remote mobile locations I have heard how quiet the bands can be and, trust me, a town or city dwelling is never truly free from noise when you have sensitive receiving equipment of the kind we DXers use. All you need is one piece of noisy equipment, a psu, a thermostat, a light bulb, etc. and you can wave goodbye to weak signal DXing.

Can't say I am impressed with the April Lyrids so far. We're only a day or two from the peak.

The tropo peaked in the morning. Conditions tried to recover mid-evening but never amounted to much. It was all a fairly half-hearted affair with mostly weak or very weak signals. Only Aurich and Bremen reached RDS levels.
My overnight meteor scatter failed as I forgot to transfer the antenna from my XDR to my S2. Ooops!

Maybe there's a slight hint of the April Lyrid meteor shower. These should be active between April 16 and April 25 with a peak around April 22nd or 23rd. Regular meteor scatter transmitters were not included in the log.
Good DX!

A big thank you to Nick for informing me I had received Raichberg via scatter after he had seen my log on the FM List. This breaks my personal scatter distance record and I knew nothing about it! I must have gone into automatic mode, not noticing the transmitter site when I logged it. I didn't even notice the tell-tale mention of "Baden Wurttemburg" in the web stream link when I checked the web stream. My brain cell was clearly elsewhere as I had assumed this was a more regular Rheinland Pfalz transmitter. Then a phone call from Nick in the evening congratulated me for receiving Raichberg. I just responded with a surprised "Did I?". I would have spotted this later when I compiled my log anyway, but how bizarre to discover this from a phone call. So my scatter record has now shot up from 788 km up to 813 km, breaking that 800 km barrier.
Scatter was unusual today as the nearer Germans were not up to their usual strengths, so I was surprised to begin with hearing Remda doing so well on 107.6. I thought this must have been a UK station at first. Then the signal faded up sufficiently to hear a German OM talking, followed by a jingle ID and then a conversation with a male correspondent.
